What
is Taekwondo?
Taekwondo
is a modern form of an old Korean fighting system. Its origins date back
1300 years to when it existed as a form of Korean foot fighting known as
Tae Kyan. Through
the centuries, hand techniques were incorporated and refined, finally
producing what is now called Taekwondo. Today Taekwondo is most often
identified by
its fast, high and spinning kicks,
an aspect of the art which makes it a very powerful sport and very
spectacular to see. The popularity of Taekwondo is due in part to the fact
that the majority of students and schools are directly to one
international governing body, The World Taekwondo Federation (WTF.) This
governing body provides international standardization of techniques,
international recognition of rank and international sanctioning of
seminars and tournaments. Taekwondo's popularity can also be attributed
to the fact it was an Olympic demonstration sport in the '88 Olympics
in Seoul, Korea as well as the '92 Olympics in Barcelona, Spain. Taekwondo
is an official Pan-American sport and will be a full medal sport in the
2000 Olympic games in Sydney, Australia.
